Six Week Basic Sign Language Class
New River Community and Technical College is offering a six-week basic sign language class on Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m., starting May 3 through the Nicholas County Campus at the Workforce Building in Summersville.
Students will learn basic sign language communication; expressive as well as receptive signs will be practiced and deaf culture and history will be explored. Introduction of the alphabet, numbers, basic signs, family signs, education signs, daily living signs and food signs will be presented. The last night of class will include a project communicated in sign language (i.e. a song, poem, etc). Afterward, the class with share a meal at a local restaurant with no voicing, only sign language to practice what they have learned.
Pre-registration for the course is required by April 28, and the cost is $80 per person.
